Intro: This is a bit of a retrospective blog post. I don’t pretend to know how to find your calling, I am trying to find what may work for me based on my own life examples. Maybe it can also work for you, and I am looking forward to your comments!
As I was sitting in a hot thermal pool in Hungary near the Romanian border, I started thinking about my new endeavour, video making. A new hobby, again. I have been trying tons of hobbies in my life. If you’d ask me, what I was doing in the evenings after school, then university and finally work, since childhood, I will tell you that I have been playing 3 musical instruments, learning to dance 3 different dances, drawing, playing ping pong, tennis, running, cycling, doing yoga, etc, etc.
Tell me frankly, are you overwhelmed by these young lucky bastards like Mark Zuckerberg who are earning millions having hardly finished a university? Have you ever thought it’s too late for you to start your own business or to work like insane in order to become rich some time in the future?
I have, and it drives me crazy that I am already 30, successfully finished the university, worked for 8 years in a row, have no kids and still haven’t become a rich chick. I am a type of a person who is always in a rush to conquer new peaks, but I seldom realize that I just might not be ready for that. It takes time. Have you ever heard of this phrase? Fake it until you make it.
People, especially us women, often get moments of a low self-confidence. Our hormones live their own life, doing whatever they want with our mood. But that’s us who’s got the brain, so we can fool them, right?
Let me share one trick I personally use to fool my hormones, complemented with a great method I learnt from Amy Cuddy, a TED speaker.
How you start your day, matters a lot. For those of you who remember their dreams, have you ever noticed that a dream that you just had before waking up, sets the mood for the rest of the day? Or a song that you hear right after opening your eyes will chase you until the evening?
When we are in a half-awake state, an alpha-state of mind, we let the information go straight into our brain, we don’t have filters activated yet. So whatever comes to your mind as the first thing in the morning, will take root there and will influence your whole day if not beyond that.
For years, I’ve been having problems with getting asleep in the evening. I’ve been lying in the dark with my eyes closed, but my brain was working like insane. Producing new, sometimes totally crazy ideas. Sometimes I’ve been fighting with it using Jose Silva method (which worked by the way), the other days I’ve turned on the lights and put my ideas on paper.
Have you ever experienced waves of self-doubt when you’ve just stepped on a new path? When you question yourself – is it really what I am supposed to be doing? What if I fail and the time I spend on it, the most precious resource I have, will be lost?
Surprisingly, this feeling often strikes highly educated and knowledgeable people, because here all your education and intelligence can work against you. I’ve studied economics for 6 years at a university and have been working as a project manager for over 5 years now, and it has become a rule for me to evaluate each and every option before I take it.
